Can the gravity blanket be machine washed?

Jun 09, 2026

Most gravity/weighted blankets should NOT be machine washed - or at least require special care. Here's why:

Weight distribution issues: The fill materials (glass beads, plastic pellets, or sand) can shift or clump in the washing machine, ruining the blanket's even weight distribution.

Durability concerns: The internal stitching and fabric can be damaged by the agitation of a washing machine.

Water absorption: Some weighted blankets can become extremely heavy when wet, potentially damaging your washing machine.

General care recommendations:

Spot clean with a mild detergent and damp cloth

Use a removable duvet cover (wash the cover regularly instead)

Hand wash in a bathtub if deep cleaning is needed (with cold water and gentle detergent)

Air dry or tumble dry on low heat (if the care label allows)

Avoid machine washing unless the care label explicitly says it's safe

Always check the manufacturer's care label on your specific blanket, as some newer gravity blankets are designed to be machine washable on a gentle cycle.
